According to reports that some Duarteons passed on to others, First Baptist Church was established and incorporated in 1924, at Elder street in Duarte, California. The small membership was under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Martin, followed by Reverend Anderson for many years. Due to a fire, the church was closed for many years and the few records that were maintained were destroyed. Reverend Anderson, along with the members, was responsible for rebuilding the one room church. How long Reverend Anderson remained as Pastor has not been established; however, it is certain that in 1937, Brother and Sister Hardie Lee were instrumental in keeping the church doors open along with sister Mary Byrd, Sister Hudson, Grandma Davis, Deacon and Sister Steward, and Ma Pearl Thomas, grandmother of Deacon Steve Mency.
